ECW wins 2009 RICS Award for Sustainability in Wales
23 May 2009
After an epic week long judging session, the Environment Centre Wales was declared the winner of the 2009 RICS Award for Sustainability in Wales at a ceremony hosted by Jason Mohammed of BBC Wales.
The RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Awards are designed to encourage and recognise outstanding achievement in the field of conservation and the enhancement of our built and natural environment.
As winners in the 'Sustainability' category, sponsored in 2009 by The Carbon Trust, Environment Centre Wales has been recognised for its innovation in the efficient use of energy and materials to provide a sustainable environment.
Commenting on the strength of the winning ECW entry, the judges stated that the "whole building process from conception through to the completion and the continued operation of the research science centre has achieved BREEAM Excellent rating - a particuarly challenging standard to achieve let alone sustain. This building is an inspiration to the staff who work in it and will be a best practice model for future development ... An outstanding facility wholly deserving of the Sustainability accolade."
ECW will now represent Wales at the international finals of the prestigious awards in October.
